Trainers and Jockeys

Trainers with a runner who have already won a Grand National:

Sue Smith - 2013
Paul Nicholls - 2012 (also 2nd in 2005, 3rd in 2009, 4th in 2010)
Donald McCain - 2011 (also 6th in 2008 and 6th in 2012)
Jonjo O'Neill - 2010 (also 2nd in 2004, 3rd in 2005, 3rd in 2006, 3rd in 2011, 2nd in 2012)
Venetia Williams - 2009
David Pipe - 2008 (also 2nd in 2009)
Gordon Elliot - 2007
Willie Mullins - 2005 (also 2nd in 2006, 3rd in 2008, 6th in 2010 and 6th in 2011)
Nigel Twiston Davies - 2003 & 1998 (also 5th in 1996, 3rd in 1997, 6th in 2003, 5th in 2010)
Ted Walsh - 2000 (also 4th in 2011 and 3rd in 2012)

Paul Nicholls finally broke his Grand National hoodoo in 2012. Prior to this he had no wins from 52 runners - and only 25% of his horses completed the race. However, he has also saddled three placed horses; Royal Auclair (2nd in 2005), My Will (3rd in 2009) and Big Fella Thanks (4th in 2010).

Nicky Henderson is another leading trainer who has yet to win the race, although he has come close three times with Zongalero (2nd in 1979), The Tsarevich (2nd in 1987) and Brown Windsor (4th in 1990). However, 17 of his last 19 runners have failed to get round, with ten fallers and four pulled up. Liberthine is the closest he has come in the past two decades, finishing fifth in 2007.

While Jonjo O'Neill had an awful record in the race as a jockey (he never completed the course in eight rides, falling four times, pulled up three times and unseated rider once!), his record as a trainer is superb (one win, two seconds and three third places) and he came very close to adding a second victory with Sunnyhillboy in 2012.

The recent record of Evan Williams should get a worthy mention too, as he has saddled one of the placed horses in each of the last five Grand Nationals (three years in succession with State of Play and then the following two years with Cappa Bleu).

Venetia Williams (Mon Mome in 2009) and Jenny Pitman (twice, with Corbiere in 1983 and Royal Athlete in 1995) are the only two women to have trained a Grand National winner.

When it comes to the Grand National, horsemen like to keep it in the family! Tommy Carberry saddled Bobbyjo to success in 1999, with son Paul on board, 24 years after riding L'Escargot to victory. A year later Ted Walsh trained Papillon to win with son Ruby in the saddle.

Both David Pipe (Comply or Die) and Donald McCain (Ballabriggs) have also followed in the footsteps of their famous fathers, matching the training feats of Martin and Ginger by training the winner of the Grand National in 2008 and 2011 respectively.

Jockeys still riding that have already won a Grand National:

Ryan Mania - 2013
Daryl Jacob - 2012 (also 4th in 2007)
Jason Maguire - 2011 (also 6th in 2008 and 6th in 2012)
Tony McCoy - 2010 (also 3rd in 2001, 3rd in 2002, 3rd in 2006 and 3rd in 2011)
Liam Treadwell - 2009
Timmy Murphy - 2008 (also 2nd in 2001, 4th in 2005 and 2nd in 2009)
Robbie Power - 2007
Niall Madden - 2006 (also 6th in 2007 and 5th in 2012)
Ruby Walsh - 2005 & 2000 (also 4th in 2001, 4th in 2002, 2nd in 2006, 3rd in 2009, 6th in 2011)
Barry Geraghty - 2003 (also 6th in 2000, 4th in 2004, 6th in 2006, 3rd in 2007 and 4th in 2008)
Paul Carberry - 1999 (also 6th in 1996, 4th in 1997 and 2nd in 2008)

Ruby Walsh is the most successful jockey currently riding, with two wins (on Papillon and Hedgehunter), a second, a third and two fourths. He has completed the Grand National course on all bar two of his eleven rides to date – and has also won the Irish (twice), Scottish and Welsh Nationals.

Champion Jockey Tony McCoy finally won the race on his fifteenth attempt in 2010. Prior to this he had not enjoyed the best of luck in the race, completing the course on only five occasions. McCoy now joins Walsh as the only two jockeys currently riding to have completed the 'Grand Slam' of National victories.

Of current jockeys Paul Maloney has finished in the places the most times without winning the race, with one 3rd and three 4th places to his name in the last four years (on State of Play in 2009, 2010 & 2011 and Cappa Bleu in 2012 & 2013).

Katie Walsh, sister to Ruby, last year became the first female jockey to ride a horse to finish placed in the Grand National, achieving third on board Seabass for her father Ted.
